UEFA Champions League Upset: Porto’s Late Collapse Against Real Betis – What Went Wrong?

0

National team midfielder Hwang In-beom (30) came off the bench as Porto suffered a comeback defeat to Real Betis in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League (UCL). Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) overcame Manchester City in a thrilling encounter.

On Thursday, Porto fell 3-2 to Betis in an away fixture at La Cartuja in Seville, Spain, during the second match of the 2026-27 UCL group stage.

Following a 2-0 loss to Manchester City on October 9, Porto has now slumped to 30th place out of 36 teams in the group stage after consecutive defeats.

Hwang entered the fray in the 71st minute with his team leading 2-1. However, Porto conceded twice in quick succession, letting a seemingly certain victory slip away.

Despite limited playing time, Hwang made his presence felt, delivering one cross, creating two chances, and completing one successful dribble in just 19 minutes. His passing accuracy was an impressive 92%.

Porto’s collapse began when they conceded an equalizer to Kucho Hernández in the 74th minute. The final blow came in the 84th minute when Isco converted a penalty to complete the turnaround.

In a high-octane clash, defending champions PSG outgunned Manchester City 4-2.

PSG’s offensive onslaught saw Achraf Hakimi, Ousmane Dembélé, and Vitinha find the net in the first half. Magnès Akliouche added another in the second half to seal a convincing victory.

Manchester City, recently embroiled in financial fair play controversies, saw Erling Haaland bag a brace. However, their defensive frailties were exposed, ending their eight-game winning streak across all competitions.

Real Madrid pulled off a stunning comeback against AS Roma in an away fixture.

Trailing 3-1 until the 82nd minute, Los Blancos mounted an incredible resurgence. Carlos Espi ignited the comeback, followed by Endrick’s equalizer in the 85th minute. Antonio Rüdiger then capped off the remarkable turnaround with a 90th-minute winner, securing a 4-3 victory.

Liverpool and Aston Villa both hit the six-goal mark in their respective matches.

The Reds triumphed 6-3 in an away game against LASK, while Villa demolished Fenerbahçe 6-0 at home.

In a major upset, Bodo/Glimt shocked Borussia Dortmund with a 1-0 victory. With four points from a win and a draw, the Norwegian side now occupies 24th place, the final spot for tournament progression.

Shakhtar Donetsk notched their first win of the tournament, overcoming AEK Athens 3-1.
