On Thursday, President Lee Jae Myung assessed the South Korea-U.S. summit with President Donald Trump, stating that it has opened a new chapter in cooperation between the two nations.

Regarding Trump’s comment about his inability to speak with Kim Jong Un, the General Secretary of North Korea’s Workers’ Party, but his intention to return to see him, President Lee characterized it as a promising signal that could spark a wave of peace on the Korean Peninsula.

President Lee shared on Facebook that he strongly concurs with the need to address the rapidly evolving security and economic landscape, and to elevate the South Korea-U.S. relationship into a future-oriented comprehensive strategic alliance. He affirmed their mutual decision to further enhance the modernization of the alliance.

President Lee noted that President Trump expressed robust support for South Korea’s plans to construct nuclear-powered submarines. He added that this will enable them to further develop the alliance in a mutually beneficial manner through bolstered self-defense capabilities.

He also highlighted that the agreement on tariff negotiations is expected to broaden collaboration in future industries, encompassing advanced technology development, substantial investments, and the creation of high-quality jobs. Lee emphasized that energy security is another critical area of bilateral cooperation. He wrote that it aims to achieve significant progress in uranium enrichment and spent nuclear fuel reprocessing, continuing the joint efforts to bolster energy security.

President Lee concluded that most importantly, he view President Trump’s proposal for a North Korea-U.S. summit as a beacon of hope that could usher in a new era of peace on the Korean Peninsula. As both a peacemaker and facilitator, he’s committed to pursuing substantive diplomatic efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region.
