North Korea and Russia appear to be in the final stages of construction on a new road bridge spanning the Tumen River, with work nearing completion ahead of the crossing’s anticipated opening. While the bridge structure itself is largely finished, customs and quarantine facilities on both sides remain under construction, leaving the exact opening date uncertain.

North Korea-focused media outlet NK News reported, citing satellite imagery, that both countries have recently completed paving work on the bridge deck and made substantial progress on customs facility construction.

On the North Korean side, roofing work on the main customs building has been completed, and auxiliary facilities believed to be designated for quarantine operations have been established. Access roads connecting the bridge to customs facilities have also been paved. Russia is continuing construction of a large customs and cargo-processing complex, although work on quarantine facilities and connecting roads has not yet been completed.

The bridge spans approximately 1,030 meters (3,379 feet) in total length, including a 315-meter (1,033-foot) section crossing the Tumen River. It will be the first road bridge connecting North Korea and Russia for vehicle traffic. Until now, the two countries have relied exclusively on a railway bridge built in the late 1950s as their sole land transportation link. Once operational, the new bridge is expected to facilitate expanded logistics, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.

The two countries held an official groundbreaking ceremony on April 30 of last year and conducted a bridge-connection ceremony on April 21 this year. Russia has reportedly been working toward a completion target of June 19, marking the second anniversary of an agreement between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin to construct the bridge.

However, slower progress on the Russian side’s customs and related infrastructure may affect the timeline. Under official plans, the customs and quarantine facilities are designed to process up to 300 vehicles per day, but some components of the complex are not expected to be completed until 2027.
