OpenAI is teaming up with Com2uS and Song Jae-kyung, a pioneering game developer behind, The Kingdom of the Winds, and Lineage, to host a game development hackathon using their coding agent, Codex.

The company announced on Tuesday that the OpenAI Game Builders Seoul event will take place in Seoul on August 31.

This Seoul gathering marks OpenAI’s first global event centered on game development using Codex. Backed by Com2uS, a leading Korean gaming company, the event will run under the slogan, Build with Codex, Play with Hive.

The collaboration aims to explore innovative game production techniques using Codex, tapping into Korea’s dynamic developer community and its significant presence in the global gaming industry.

Codex, OpenAI’s AI-powered coding assistant, streamlines software development by generating, modifying, and testing code based on natural language inputs. Hive, Com2uS’s game backend platform, facilitates the integration of crucial features like login systems, payment processing, user analytics, and security measures through AI plugins.

During the event, participants will create games using Codex with vibe coding, then incorporate essential launch and operational features into Com2uS’s Hive platform via the Codex plugin.

The event will feature prominent figures from Korea’s gaming sector. Notably, Song, the legendary creator of The Kingdom of the Winds, Lineage, and ArcheAge, will share his experience of returning to game development using Codex. More participating developers will be announced in the coming days.

The event will be structured into two tracks. Track 1 will showcase games pre-developed with Codex, while Track 2 will challenge teams to create AAA-quality games using the latest Codex version within a five-hour timeframe.

The Track 1 winner, determined by popular vote, will receive 50,000 USD in OpenAI API credits and a year-long ChatGPT Pro subscription. Top performers in Track 2 will also earn annual ChatGPT Pro subscriptions, while all main event participants will receive 100 USD worth of OpenAI API credits.

Oliver Jay, OpenAI’s Head of International Business, expressed the company’s commitment to empowering developers to transform their ideas into playable games using Codex, enabling them to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation in game development.

Interested developers can apply through the event website until August 26. Applicants must submit Codex-developed game prototypes and outline their production experience. Following a review process, 40 selected teams will be invited to participate in the one-day offline builders event on August 31.
