Boston Dynamics (BD), a robotics affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group, is set to invest 100 million USD to establish a state-of-the-art robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) center in the U.S.

According to industry sources on Thursday, BD recently unveiled plans to develop a 32,000-square-foot (about 2,972 square meter) advanced robotics and AI center in Waltham, Massachusetts.

This project aims to consolidate advanced manufacturing, AI, workforce training, and research and development (R&D) operations currently spread across three nearby facilities into a single location.

The total investment of 100 million USD includes a 25 million USD grant from the state government’s Economic Development Incentive Program (EDIP), contingent on the creation of 1,250 jobs by 2033.

BD will use this funding to establish a technology development hub for its humanoid robot Atlas, robotic dog Spot, and logistics robot Stretch. The remaining 75 million USD will be invested in AI and quantum technologies.

The company plans to transition to the new facility gradually, starting in mid-2027, through a major remodeling and construction project.

This investment aligns with the group’s strategy to establish a production system for Atlas. Hyundai Motor Group aims to create a manufacturing facility capable of producing 30,000 humanoid robots annually and plans to deploy 25,000 robots at Hyundai and Kia production sites.

Amanda McMaster, interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BD, remarked that this expansion demonstrates the rapid growth of the industry.
