Ericsson, the global telecommunications equipment giant, unveiled its high-precision location tracking service based on 5G standalone mode (SA) on Monday.

The newly introduced 5G Advanced Location Service boasts impressive accuracy, pinpointing locations within about 4 inches outdoors and about 3.3 feet indoors. This feat is achieved through real-time kinematic (RTK) technology for outdoor tracking, while Ericsson’s proprietary solutions handle indoor positioning.

This groundbreaking service integrates location positioning capabilities as a core feature of the 5G SA network. It enables precise positioning across all 5G devices without requiring additional sensors, promising consistent location services even in complex indoor and outdoor environments.

Users can access the service without installing a separate app, and it offers improved battery life compared to satellite-based alternatives.

Ericsson plans to roll out this service commercially starting in the first quarter of this year.

The company believes this innovation will empower communication service providers (CSPs) to monetize precise location services and expand their offerings beyond traditional mobile-centric services. Ericsson envisions applications across various sectors, including manufacturing, healthcare, public safety, automotive, and drone industries.
