The number of global users of large language models (LLMs) has surpassed 3.8 billion, generating approximately 20.7 billion USD in revenue for companies. Anthropic has emerged as the top performer in terms of sales.

According to recent data released on Monday by market research firm Counterpoint Research, Anthropic secured the leading position with a 31.4% market share based on revenue for the first quarter of this year.

Anthropic also excelled in profitability, boasting an industry-leading average monthly revenue per user of 16.20 USD.

Counterpoint Research highlighted Anthropic’s impressive performance, noting that these results were achieved despite having a smaller user base compared to competitors like OpenAI and Google.

Anthropic reported 1 million monthly active users (MAU) for the first quarter of this year. In contrast, OpenAI boasted 9 million MAUs and Google had 7.5 million, significantly outpacing Anthropic’s user numbers.

The research firm concluded that Anthropic has successfully captured the high-end professional market.

OpenAI ranked second in market share based on revenue with 29.0%, followed by Google at 12.1% and Microsoft at 7.2%. Counterpoint Research explained that OpenAI aims to be a platform for everyone rather than focusing on premium services for niche markets.

Among Chinese tech giants, Tencent led the pack with a 4.8% market share, followed by Baidu at 3.6% and Alibaba at 2.9%.

In terms of average monthly revenue per user, Microsoft ranked second at 5.00 USD, trailing only Anthropic. Tencent secured third place with 2.90 USD, while OpenAI came in fourth at 2.20 USD. Interestingly, Meta, which boasts the highest MAU at 10 million, generated only 0.10 USD per user on average. Google, with 7.5 million MAUs, managed just 1.10 USD per user.
