NorthKoreaReviving the June 15 Spirit: Key Steps for Peace and Prosperity on the Korean Peninsula

The Democratic Party of Korea announced on Monday that it would renew its efforts to pursue peace and prosperity on the 26th anniversary of the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration.

In a written statement, party spokesperson Boo Seung-chan said that twenty-six years ago today, the leaders of North and South Korea sat together and pledged to cooperate towards coexistence and unification, moving beyond over half a century of hostility and confrontation. He added that regrettably, the June 15 Declaration is now on shaky ground.

Boo continued that North Korea has officially adopted the stance of two hostile states, and recently, the pro-North Korea General Association of Korean Residents in Japan has gone so far as to remove the June 15 Joint Declaration provisions from its charter. However, the June 15 North-South Joint Declaration is not a story of failure.

The spokesperson emphasized that the spirit of June 15 represents a decisive step to end half a century of hostility and embark on an unprecedented path of coexistence. Today, it honors that courage and seek to rediscover the road to peace and prosperity.

He stated that the Democratic Party will intensify efforts to restore military confidence-building measures to prevent accidental conflicts and will work diligently to create conditions for dialogue on peaceful coexistence with North Korea. It urges North Korea to reopen its closed doors and join them at the table for discussions on peaceful coexistence.

Boo concluded that the destiny of the Korean Peninsula can only be determined when both North and South come together. The Lee Jae Myung administration and the Democratic Party are committed to upholding the June 15 spirit championed by the late President Kim Dae-jung.
