Daewoong Pharmaceutical is expanding its digital healthcare business in top-tier hospitals by supplying its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smart bed monitoring system thynC to Ajou University Hospital.

On Monday, the company announced the implementation of thynC across seven wards, covering 342 beds at Ajou University Hospital. The hospital is exploring the possibility of gradually extending the system’s coverage to up to 1,100 beds.

ThynC is an advanced system that utilizes wearable biosensors to continuously monitor patients’ vital signs, including electrocardiogram (ECG), heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation in real-time. Its AI-driven capabilities for fall detection and emergency arrhythmia identification assist medical professionals in swiftly recognizing potential patient distress.

Ajou University Hospital initiated equipment installation and infrastructure development last year, fine-tuning the system for clinical use through August of this year. The technology has since been rolled out from thoracic surgery and cardiology departments to emergency wards and integrated nursing care units.

The system integrates with electronic medical records (EMR), automatically logging biometric data every 60 seconds. This wireless monitoring capability allows staff to track patients’ vital signs even as they move within the ward, potentially boosting both patient care quality and operational efficiency.

As of October, thynC has been adopted by 218 healthcare facilities nationwide, with over 20,000 beds now equipped with the technology.

Daewoong Pharmaceutical is actively promoting its smart ward initiative, focusing on expanding thynC’s presence in major hospitals and regional medical centers. The system’s ability to provide continuous monitoring for critically ill patients and those in pre- and post-operative care makes it a valuable tool for enhancing safety across general wards.

Looking ahead, the company aims to develop customized usage protocols that account for the unique patient profiles and operational needs of individual healthcare facilities, thereby broadening the system’s applicability across diverse clinical environments.

Dr. Han Sang-wook, Director of Ajou University Medical Center, expressed optimism about the technology, stating that it anticipates that the real-time monitoring of vital signs will significantly enhance patient safety through early detection of concerning symptoms. It’s also considering expanding the system to cover all 1,100 beds in the facility.

Lee Chang-jae, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, emphasized the company’s commitment, saying that it’s dedicated to strengthening the partnership with Ajou University Hospital and supporting the digital transformation of healthcare institutions across southern Gyeonggi province, with a focus on creating more patient-centered care environments.
