EtcSouth Korea Backs Global Call Amid Israel-Hezbollah Tensions

Amid escalating clashes between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, the South Korean government has called for a ceasefire.

In a statement from South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, the government announced on Thursday, “We welcome the calls for an immediate 21-day ceasefire from countries like the United States and France regarding the Israel-Lebanon border, and we fully support this initiative.”

The statement continued, “We strongly urge all relevant parties to accept the ceasefire proposal immediately and to make ongoing efforts to alleviate regional tensions.”

Previously, the U.S., France, and other Western nations proposed a negotiation plan at the UN General Assembly aimed at establishing a 21-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

However, Israel rejected the ceasefire proposal and conducted targeted airstrikes against a Hezbollah drone commander.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as of the latest reports, approximately 480 South Korean citizens remain in Israel, while around 140 are in Lebanon.
