The Ministry of National Defense proposed an inter-Korean military meeting on Monday to discuss easing tensions in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and establishing a baseline for the Military Demarcation Line (MDL). The Ministry of Unification expressed hope for a positive response from North Korea.

In a press statement, the Ministry of Unification emphasized the importance of reducing military tensions and preventing incidents, citing concerns over potential accidental clashes caused by differing perceptions of the MDL between the two Koreas.

This proposal marks the first inter-Korean military talks initiative since President Lee Jae-myung took office. The Defense Ministry emphasized the need for discussions on establishing an MDL baseline.

Defense Ministry Policy Chief Kim Hong Cheol explained that North Korean troops have been constructing tactical roads and fences near the MDL within the DMZ, with some personnel repeatedly crossing into South Korean territory.

Kim highlighted that the loss of numerous MDL markers has led to frequent North Korean incursions, raising the risk of unintended confrontations. This situation underscores the need for talks to establish a clear baseline.

He added that specific meeting details, including schedules and locations, could be arranged through the Panmunjom channel.

If realized, this would be the first inter-Korean military meeting in about seven years, following the 10th general-level talks in October 2018. During those talks, both sides agreed to remove 11 guard posts each from the DMZ, with major generals or lieutenant generals leading the delegations.
