Incheon Naeun Hospital has become the first healthcare facility in South Korea to implement a cutting-edge medical data backup and recovery solution. This innovative system is designed to safeguard against cyberattacks, including ransomware, and potential system failures. The implementation marks the inaugural supply case following Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s licensing agreement with Hippocrat Labs.
On Monday, Incheon Naeun Hospital announced the adoption of MediSafe, a state-of-the-art distributed backup and recovery solution. Notably, Daewoong Pharmaceutical secured this supply contract with Incheon Naeun Hospital just one week after finalizing their licensing agreement with Hippocrat Labs.
MediSafe leverages blockchain technology to create secure backups of medical data in an environment isolated from the hospital’s internal network. This advanced solution significantly reduces the risk of backup data compromise, even in the event of external attacks like ransomware, and facilitates rapid data recovery.
A key advantage of MediSafe is its seamless integration capability, allowing implementation without necessitating extensive changes to existing clinical systems.
As the regional emergency medical center and the primary healthcare institution for Incheon’s northwest area, Incheon Naeun Hospital has proactively established this robust backup and recovery system to ensure uninterrupted patient care in the face of potential system failures.
With critical medical information – including patient records, prescriptions, and test results – managed through electronic systems, the hospital aims to guarantee the restoration of essential data during system failures, thereby maintaining continuity of care.
Dr. Ha Heon-young, President of Incheon Naeun Hospital, emphasized that in this era of rapid digital transformation in healthcare, the secure protection and swift recovery of medical data have become paramount. It anticipates that the implementation of MediSafe will not only establish a dependable recovery system for the clinical data but also set a new standard for data protection across regional healthcare institutions.
Yoo Chang-deuk, head of Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s Emergency Treatment Centre (ETC) Hospital Division, remarked that Incheon Naeun Hospital’s pioneering adoption of this system is a watershed moment, setting a precedent for robust medical data protection and recovery systems. It’s committed to expanding the support to enable hospitals nationwide to build reliable medical data backup and recovery systems at competitive costs.
The growing cyber security threats to medical institutions have underscored the critical importance of robust data protection and recovery systems. The Korea Social Security Information Service reports a dramatic increase in recognized cyber intrusion incidents at domestic medical facilities, rising from 18 in 2020 to 71 in 2024. The potential for ransomware attacks to block access to medical records and test results poses a significant threat to patient care, highlighting the crucial need for rapid recovery systems.
The expanding utilization of medical data is further fueling the demand for enhanced security measures. As healthcare institutions increasingly adopt artificial intelligence (AI) and undergo digital transformation, they face the challenge of managing ever-growing volumes of data, including medical records, test results, and diagnostic images. Consequently, developing comprehensive response systems that not only safeguard personal information but also minimize disruptions to patient care in the event of cyber intrusions has emerged as a critical priority for the healthcare sector.
