Kylian Mbappé’s hat-trick heroics propelled Real Madrid to victory in José Mourinho’s homecoming match.
Real Madrid cruised to a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad in the second round of the 2026-27 La Liga at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, Spain on Thursday.
After two trophy-less seasons, Real Madrid brought back Mourinho, who had left the club in 2013, securing their second consecutive win to start the season. During his previous stint from 2010 to 2013, Mourinho led Real Madrid to La Liga (2011-12), Copa del Rey (2010-11), and Supercopa (2012) titles.
In Mourinho’s first home game since his return to Real Madrid, Mbappé stole the show with a spectacular hat-trick.
Real Madrid broke the deadlock in the 40th minute through Mbappé. The French striker latched onto a through ball from Federico Valverde, skillfully evaded a defender, and rifled a left-footed shot into the net.
Real Sociedad equalized four minutes later through Luka Sučić, but Mbappé restored Real’s lead on the hour mark. He combined brilliantly with Jude Bellingham in front of goal, carving open the defense before calmly slotting home.
Buoyed by the goal, Real Madrid extended their lead eight minutes later when Vinícius found the net, courtesy of an assist from Bellingham.
Mbappé then completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute, expertly lobbing the goalkeeper after being put through by Vinícius, effectively sealing the victory.
In the post-match press conference, Mourinho lauded his team’s performance, stating that it was a fantastic game both collectively and individually. While he always prioritizes the team, Mbappé’s performance was truly world-class. He’s an exceptional player with incredible talent.
