LigaChem Biosciences announced on Thursday that its innovative cancer treatment candidate, utilizing antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) technology, has received Fast Track designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The company’s partner, SOTIO Biotech, is developing SOT106 as a treatment for soft tissue sarcoma, which has now been granted this coveted FDA status.
Fast Track designation is designed to accelerate the development and review process for new drugs targeting serious conditions with unmet medical needs. This status allows for more frequent consultations with the FDA during development and may lead to expedited review processes if certain criteria are met.
SOT106 is an innovative ADC that combines a potent anticancer drug with an antibody targeting LRRC15, a protein expressed on cancer cells. This precision-guided approach aims to deliver the drug specifically to cancer cells while minimizing collateral damage to healthy tissue.
The drug employs LigaChem Biosciences’ next-generation ADC platform ConjuAll, which merges SOTIO’s LRRC15-targeting antibody with LigaChem Biosciences’s advanced drug conjugation technology.
LRRC15 is a protein found across various sarcoma types, potentially allowing SOT106 to target a broad spectrum of soft tissue sarcomas where this protein is expressed.
Soft tissue sarcomas are a diverse group of cancers originating in the body’s connective tissues, including muscles, fat, and blood vessels. These rare cancers present significant challenges due to their variety and limited treatment options, especially for advanced or recurrent cases.
LigaChem Biosciences has strategically positioned ADCs as a cornerstone of its growth strategy, forging partnerships with global pharmaceutical giants. A standout deal in 2023 saw the company ink an agreement with Janssen Biotech worth up to 1.7225 billion USD.
Dr. Vibi Bawra, Chief Medical Officer at SOTIO, emphasized the critical need for new treatments in soft tissue sarcoma, noting that despite decades of research, outcomes for advanced and recurrent patients have remained stubbornly poor.
He highlighted the FDA’s Fast Track designation as a crucial regulatory milestone, underscoring the potential of SOT106’s innovative design and LRRC15-targeting approach to offer new hope for patients with various soft tissue sarcomas.
In a further boost to its potential, SOT106 received FDA orphan drug designation in May for osteosarcoma treatment. Sotio is gearing up to launch its first patient clinical trial for SOT106 before year’s end.
The LigaChem Biosciences-SOTIO collaboration, initiated in 2021, centers on a technology transfer agreement for the global development and commercialization of ADC candidates using LigaChem Biosciences’s ConjuAll platform.
This landmark deal, valued at up to 1.0275 billion USD, includes upfront payments and milestone-based fees. SOT106 represents the first fruit of this partnership, marking a significant step as LigaChem Biosciences’s platform technology advances into clinical trials.
The agreement grants Sotio global rights to develop and commercialize multiple ADC therapies using the ConjuAll platform. SOT106 stands as the inaugural ADC candidate born from this collaborative effort.
